Trashion

After speaking to one of my friends from my studio about my practice, she suggested I research the idea of trashion- fashion made from repurposed items, kind of like the car boot sale challenge on the latest episode of RuPaul's Drag Race UK. The idea is that objects that would otherwise have been thrown out become edited, high fashion garments. I like this concept because it is especially relevant to the idea of sustainability within fashion which we are faced with at the moment. Since fast fashion is becoming so prevalent, we are producing and buying clothes at a higher rate than ever before. Our waste products from fast fashion are devastating, whether thats from the amount of water that is involved in the production of denim, or the plastic that garments come wrapped in when online shopping. Trashion is a new way of exploring the world of high fashion and its trends, whilst avoiding damage to our planet. When making my garments it is incredibly important to consider how to avoid as much waste as possible. So far I have been using items that would not typically be used to make clothes, such as pillows and blankets. I have been buying these items brand new, but maybe I could visit charity shops to increase sustainability. After taking part in Oxfam's Second Hand September, my eyes were definitely opened as to how much damage consistently buying new clothes is doing to our environment. Whilst making the BEDHEAD collection I want to be as sustainable as possible, and considering the ideas of the Trashion Movement will definitely enable me to do so.
