Third Year Idea

After working with Vin and Omi for fashion week I have been inspired to start creating my own collection. My collection is going to be centred around the idea of comfort as a baby, and how when we are younger we are comforted by physical objects, such as blankets, toys and pillows. These are soft tactile materials which calm babies down when they are distressed. I want to explore how we can use this childhood comfort by comforting adults, in terms of mental health, and looking at how we can use the same materials to make a collection of looks with a view to calm adults down in our hectic, mentally-draining modern day lives. I feel that this is particularly important to me, as I suffer with anxiety and depression, and if I am physically comfortable (e.g. sitting watching Netflix in tracksuit bottoms), I feel more relaxed, than if I was wearing jeans for example. I want to blend the idea of home comforts with the idea of encouraging people who are isolated and lonely into going outside, by making some glam, party wear, out of comforting materials, such as pillows and blankets. As well as this, I want to combat the idea of body dysmorphia and anxiety around appearance, by ensuring that these outfits are not only physically comfortable, but flattering and make the wearer feel relaxed and confident. I intend to start by cutting out a simple pattern of a dress, and tagging pillows to it, and directing a shoot, of someone wearing it both in their room where they'd feel most comfortable, and out and about. I feel it will be interesting to discover this idea of physical comfort, confidence, yet also standing out and looking one-of-a-kind in a very uniquely designed outfit.
